The 2008/09 Overall HR Initiative of the Year

New Zealand Post

GOAL is a holistic programme of initiatives that includes: redefined roles with clear expectations and measures, a structure built around teams, succession planning, development planning supported by training and on the job practice and a new recruitment strategy.

NZ Post decided to pilot this programme and chose the largest delivery branch – Marua Rd in Auckland. It was an amalgamation of six smaller sites and was the worst performing business unit in the country, with challenging employee relations.

The programme is a strategic HR approach that brings life to high performance work practice structures. The panel was impressed with the degree of planning that enabled them to achieve substantial and significant improvements in financial measures, productivity, customer satisfaction, turnover, safety, and employee engagement. Return on investment is proven and impressive. In addition, internal succession is working, people’s views are turned around, and the ‘underperforming site’ of 2006 is now a ‘flagship site’ with a national and international reputation and plenty of visitors coming to see how it works.

Now there is organisational pull to the deployment across the whole business.

Great planning; great execution; great HR!

Congratulations New Zealand Post.
